Major in Fashion Design in Florence, Italy

When you think of the world’s fashion capitals, two that may instantly spring to mind are New York City and Florence, Italy. Each city was similarly settled by artists who took to crafting art that would embody the soul of its people in the form of fashion and design. New York City and Florence are concentrated with some of most renowned designers of our time, and share the title of modern day fashion capital. Apart from those designers, Florence and New York share something else, the promise of new designers coming from Marist. Anyone who wishes to study abroad and become immersed in fashion may earn a B.F.A in Fashion Design while studying abroad in Italy - offering an experience like no other.

Marist-LdM has developed a fashion design Bachelor’s program through the Florence, Italy Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici. This institution has distinguished itself with accomplished professors in both facets of the fashion industry: design and merchandising. Professor Radley Cramer, Director of the Fashion Program, says, “…fashion is international, a natural extension for both American and international students to study, whether it be in Florence or the United States.” Marist is the only four-year U.S. institution where students can earn a B.F.A in Fashion Design while studying abroad in Italy. Earn your degree while majoring in Fashion Design in Italy through courses taught in English by an international faculty of prominent industry professionals. While in Florence, students are influenced by some of the most successful Italian designers, including GUCCI, Emilio Pucci, and Salvatore Ferragamo. It is not uncommon for the college to partner with and visit such design studios throughout Europe for inspiration and instruction.

Fashion classes take place in an ancient convent converted to meet the needs of modern times; computers, computer animated design (CAD) software, and sewing aids. Surrounded by history, students take classes specific to their field, such as textiles, draping, CAD, and drawing. Visits to see centuries of art and fashion at the Uffizi Museum and Costume Gallery are within walking distance of campus. Over four years of study, Florence students build a portfolio and gain unique internship experience.

There are portfolio requirements for any fashion design applicant including written and drawn work. Contact Marist to learn if earning a B.F.A in Fashion Design while studying abroad in Italy is right for you.
